An Owensboro man is facing multiple charges following a pursuit and an alleged attempt to destroy evidence in White Plains Saturday night.

According to the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy attempted to stop 21-year-old Kyreon Whitley on Bob Bruce Drive just after 10:00 p.m. for a broken taillight. Authorities say Whitley accelerated and led officers on a brief pursuit through South Church and Mill Streets before eventually stopping.

When deputies made contact, they reported a strong smell of marijuana and said they found a straw containing suspected fentanyl, as well as marijuana and drug paraphernalia during a search of the vehicle.

Authorities said that while Whitley was detained in the back of a patrol cruiser, he attempted to destroy a quantity of suspected fentanyl by crumbling it onto the seat and floor.

Whitley was charged with second-offense trafficking in fentanyl, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, tampering with physical evidence, and second-degree fleeing or evading police. He was also cited for operating on an expired license and was found to have active warrants for his arrest.

He was lodged in the Hopkins County Jail.
