Drivers heading through the Muhlenberg and Ohio County line should expect some traffic delays this week.

Starting Tuesday, officials with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet say crews will begin closing lanes on the Western Kentucky Parkway bridges over the Green River. They indicate a contractor has already started some maintenance work, but they now need to close lanes to finish the job safely.

The lane closures will happen between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and the work will be split up by direction. Drivers heading westbound will see closures starting Tuesday morning until Thursday at noon. Then, the crews will switch over to the eastbound bridge, closing a lane from Thursday afternoon through Saturday evening.

State transportation officials say these historic bridges are heavily traveled, with the eastbound side opening in 1963 and the westbound side opening in 1964. Today, they carry nearly 4,500 vehicles every single day.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and stay alert when traveling through the work zone this week.
