Kentucky officials have a simple message for anyone hitting the road this month: Buckle up or pay up.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Office of Highway Safety is joining law enforcement around the commonwealth and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign. Starting Monday, May 11th, and running through Sunday, May 31st, police will be out in full force looking for drivers and passengers who aren’t wearing their seat belts.
Governor Andy Beshear says that it only takes two seconds to click that belt, but those two seconds could save your life. The numbers back him up. Last year, more than 400 people died in crashes on Kentucky roads. Almost half of them were not wearing a seat belt or were not buckled into a car seat correctly.
Transportation Secretary Rebecca Goodman says buckling up should be “second nature” for everyone in the car. Experts say a seat belt reduces your risk of dying in a crash by 45 percent. If you’re in a truck or SUV, that safety goes up even more.
The campaign covers the busy Memorial Day weekend, which officials note is one of the most dangerous times to be on the road.
So, before you pull out of the driveway, make sure everyone is buckled in. For more safety tips, you can visit kyhighwaysafety.com.
