City Council Outlines Reasons for Overriding Zoning Change Recommendation

Following a public hearing Monday night, the Madisonville City Council voted 4-1 to reject a zoning change on Shamrock Drive, with council members outlining their reasons for overriding the Hopkins County Joint Planning Commission’s recommendation.

As previously covered by WFMW’s News Edge, the Council conducted a public hearing to hear an appeal of the Hopkins County Joint Planning Commission’s decision on a zoning map amendment for Shamrock Drive that would rezone 5.276 acres from agriculture to zero lot line, allowing for the potential construction of up to 20 homes.

City Attorney Hillary Croft clarified at the start of the public hearing that a majority of four votes would be required to override the recommendation.

Ward 2 Councilman Marvin Hightower noted that he previously served on the Zoning Board when it decided against the zoning map amendment.
