A Madisonville woman is facing an assault charge after an incident on Hopewell Street on Friday.

According to Madisonville Police, officers initially responded to a reported traffic accident on Hopewell Street just before 6:00 a.m. Friday. When they arrived, police say they discovered a man lying in the roadway with head and leg injuries, and 33-year-old Rebecca Hughes kneeling next to him.

Police report that Hughes claimed she had asked the victim for gas money and arranged to meet him at a gas station, but he never showed up. According to Hughes, while driving home, she claimed the victim was leaving his house carrying a basket, and when he saw her coming, he ran into the path of her car, which she said was moving at about 35 mph.

However, officers say the damage to her vehicle didn’t match her story.

Hughes was taken into custody and charged with first-degree domestic violence assault. She was lodged in the Hopkins County jail.
