The Kentucky Department of Education has designated the Hopkins County Day Treatment as an Alternative Education Program of Distinction.
In a release, Principal Nathan Howton said that earning this designation is a significant achievement that identifies the school as a statewide model for high-quality alternative education.
Alternative education programs are designed to meet the needs of students who cannot be addressed in a traditional classroom setting. These programs can be alternative classrooms, centers, or campuses that are designed to remediate academic performance, improve behavior, or provide enhanced learning experiences.
According to school officials, alternative education programs are created for students whose needs cannot be addressed in a traditional classroom setting. These programs may take place in alternative classrooms, centers, or campuses, and are designed to boost academic performance, improve behavior, or provide enhanced learning experiences.
The Hopkins County Day Treatment is one of six programs honored this year, and according to Howton, he believes this is the first time HCDT has received such recognition.
The process involved an extensive on-site visit to the Hopkins County Day Treatment by the Kentucky Department of Education Review Team. As part of the recognition, Hopkins County Day Treatment will receive a monetary award for instructional support and will be featured on the KDE website and in Kentucky Teacher. The programs were also officially recognized at last week’s meeting of the Kentucky Board of Education.
HCS Superintendent Dr. Damon Fleming congratulated Hopkins County Day Treatment on the honor, stating that this recognition reflects the hard work, commitment, and leadership that Howton brings to the program each day. He added that it also speaks highly of the staff and their dedication to supporting students and meeting their needs in meaningful ways.
Howton said that staff members are thrilled with the honor, and it’s wonderful for them to be recognized in this way due to their dedication to Alternative Education and a passion for their students. He said the staff has developed the school culture into a place where students are given the specific support they need to overcome social, emotional, and academic challenges and to realize their potential.
