Congressman James Comer announced on Tuesday that the U.S. House of Representatives has approved $1 million in federal funding to upgrade Madisonville’s sewer infrastructure and enhance overall efficiency, capacity, and reliability of the municipal wastewater collection system. The funding is part of the Commerce, Justice, Science, Energy and Water Development, and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act of 2026 and now goes to the U.S. Senate for consideration. According to a release, Congressman Comer led efforts to secure funding for the Madisonville West Side Lift Station Project, which will help ensure the city’s ability to manage wastewater in a rapidly developing area along Interstate 69 and reduce the risk of system failure.

In a written statement, Madisonville Mayor Kevin Cotton expressed his appreciation for the $1 million Community Project Funding request awarded to support improvements to the West Side Lift Station. He said this “critical investment” will strengthen Madisonville’s infrastructure, enhance reliability to residents, and support continued growth and economic development across the community. He said they are especially grateful to Congressman Comer and his dedicated staff for their leadership, advocacy, and hard work in helping secure this funding. He stated, “Their continued commitment to Madisonville and Western Kentucky is making a meaningful difference for our city and our citizens.”

Madisonville City Council Chairman Frank Stevenson also expressed his gratitude to Congressman Comer in securing House passage of $1 million in funding for the multi-year West Noel Interceptor Project, which will expand Madisonville’s wastewater treatment capacity. He said completion of this critical infrastructure project will position the city for long-term industrial, commercial, and residential growth, benefiting Madisonville and the surrounding region. He further stated that this investment is a direct result of the vision and commitment of Mayor Cotton and his administration to strengthening infrastructure and elevating the well-being of the community’s citizens.

The release says upgrades to Madisonville’s sewer system will boost efficiency and capacity, helping the city manage wastewater more effectively along Interstate 69 and reduce the risk of system failures, and support long-term compliance with the Clean Water Act. Phase 3 includes installing a new 4,000 linear foot 12-inch force main and a 750-foot 12-inch gravity sewer line to divert flow from the existing Hospital and Railroad Lift stations directly to the West Noel Avenue Sewer Interceptor. Phase 4 will eliminate the aging Martin Mall Lift Station and construct a new, better-located KYTC Lift Station.
