A Madisonville man is behind bars after a Christmas Day traffic stop led to the discovery of multiple drugs and a suspended license.

Just before 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Madisonville Police say they spotted 52-year-old Richard Geary riding a moped along East Arch Street. As officers approached, Geary reportedly drove his moped onto the sidewalk in violation of a city ordinance and did not stop immediately.

After stopping, police noted that Geary had slurred speech and slow movements. A records check confirmed his license was suspended for driving under the influence.

Authorities say they found suspected marijuana, various prescription pills, and methamphetamine in Geary’s possession, along with an open bottle of alcohol inside the moped.

Geary was taken into custody and charged with driving on a DUI-suspended license as a second offense under aggravating circumstances, operating a vehicle under the influence for a second offense, possession of methamphetamine third or greater offense, possession of amphetamine, possession of hydrocodone, prescription drugs not kept in a proper container, and possession of marijuana. He was booked into the Hopkins County Jail.
