Residents at an assisted living apartment complex were evacuated over the weekend after emergency crews responded to a report of a possible natural gas leak. The Madisonville Fire Department says rescue crews and Atmos Energy were called to Elk Creek Manor on Hickory Drive just before 1:00 a.m. Saturday after residents reported the smell of gas.

Upon arrival, officials reported that high levels of natural gas were detected, prompting the evacuation of tenants from several units as a precaution. Officials said the source of the leak was traced to a stove burner left open in a lower apartment.

All units were ventilated and inspected before Atmos declared the building safe for residents to return. Fire officials said the property manager was advised to have the gas lines further inspected.
