DSIS Superintendent Discusses Gas Leaks, Calendar Adjustments, and Repairs

The Dawson Springs Board of Education discussed recent gas leaks, make-up days, and facility repairs at this week’s meeting.

Director of Pupil Personnel Todd Marshall announced the school calendar will be amended after they had to “mark in two days missed” earlier this month as “snow days.”Superintendent Leonard Whalen explained that the missed days on December 2 and 3 will be made up on February 16th and March 13th.

click to download audioThe district dismissed early on December 1 and closed again on December 3 due to gas leaks, with a snow day closure on December 2. After Board member Meredith Hyde brought up the gas leak, Whalen said  the affected gas line had to be rerouted.

click to download audioWhalen said the problem they are runing into is that some of the gas lines are 40 to 60 years old. He added that if they start having problems with the last line they have underground, it may also be rerouted on the roof of the gym.

click to download audioHe also reported that the floor in Secretary and Treasurer Amanda Almond’s office was removed to investigate a water leak. Whalen said they believe they’ve found the issue, and he’s waiting on a proposal from the architect.

click to download audioWhalen said the repairs may have to wait for warmer, drier weather in the spring. He noted the preliminary figures he has received to fix the problem will cost between $25,000 and $30,000.

He also mentioned they have purchased a used truck.

click to download audioWhalen noted that this truck replaces the one purchased from the city 13 years ago when he became superintendent. He believes the 2006 Chevy truck will be useable for 15 to 20 years.
