
Interstate 69 southbound in Madisonville was closed Wednesday afternoon near the 114-mile marker, in front of the Madisonville mall, due to law enforcement activity.
At 2:41 p.m., Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials said the northbound lanes were temporarily closed but reopened soon afterward.
According to WFIE 14 News in Evansville, Madisonville Police told them that officers attempted to stop a vehicle due to erratic driving. Police said the driver initially refused to pull over, but eventually came to a stop.
Police told the TV station that the individual appeared to have a gun, and a brief standoff began, which prompted the closure of the interstate.
Police told 14 News that the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at around 2:45 p.m. Police also confirmed that no shots were fired at law enforcement, and no officers were injured during the event.
