A gas leak in Madisonville forced the evacuation of several homes and the closure of multiple streets on Monday.

A report from the Madisonville Fire Department released on Wednesday says crews responded to 610 Victoria Street just after 11:00 a.m. Monday, after a construction company struck a gas main.

Upon arrival, fire crews reportedly closed off Victoria Street at Princeton Pike, shut down West Jagoe, and evacuated 19 homes in the area, including the north section of Victoria Street and several houses on Jagoe.

According to authorities, Madisonville Municipal Utilities was called in to shut down power, while Madisonville Wastewater was notified that Atmos was inspecting the sewer. The Madisonville Police Department also stopped traffic from entering West Jagoe at South Seminary Street.

They said the Hopkins County Board of Education and Kentucky Emergency Management were also notified of the road closures and evacuations. Officials said fire units remained on the scene until Atmos resolved the gas leak. Once the situation was under control, all organizations were notified that the streets had reopened and the fire crews had returned to their quarters.
