Governor Andy Beshear is asking all flags at state office buildings be lowered to half-staff this week, in honor of the late former Kentucky Governor Martha Layne Collins — who died over the weekend.

She was 88 years old.

Collins was the 56th governor of Kentucky and is still its only woman to serve in the position. Prior to becoming governor in 1983, she served as lieutenant governor from 1979 until 1983.

Beshear called Collins “a powerhouse” and “a remarkable leader,” one responsible for transforming the state in the early ’80s, after bringing Toyota to Kentucky for its first-ever US site.
