With the winter months fast approaching, citizens of the Pennyrile may see utility bills quickly rise as temperatures fall.

Through the Tennessee Valley Authority’s “EnergyRight” program and the “Home Uplift” initiative, electric customers might qualify for free home energy upgrades valued up to $10,000.

This can come in the form of a new or repaired HVAC unit, new attic and/or wall insulation, new general appliances, new windows and/or doors, and/or a new electric water heater.

Small changes in these home features can save an average $500 annually on utility costs, and can be the difference in hazardous and healthy living.

More specifically, “Home Uplift” connects property renters and homeowners with energy experts, including contractors vetted by the TVA and a local power company, whose job it is then to walk through possible replacements and repairs.

Those who qualify generally see at least:
+ A 25% reduction in overall home energy use
+ A lowered risk of illness and missed work and/or school
+ And overall improvements in quality of life

Eligibility requirements include those who:
+ Have a total household income at, or below, 80% of the area median income, or at and below 200% of the federal poverty level
+ Limited single-family homes or manufactured homes built after 1976 on a permanent foundation
+ Or the home has not received upgrades in a similar TVA-funded project within the last two decades
