The Hopkinsville and Madisonville communities are mourning the loss of Thomas Badgett Jr., a notable philanthropist and beloved family man who passed away Friday at the age of 75.

Brown, as he was known to friends and family, wasn’t a man who sought public recognition.

Instead, his life was defined by his profound devotion to his loved ones and his community. For 36 years, he was a loving husband to Sue Cumbee Badgett and a dedicated father figure to her daughter, Tonya Cumbee, whom he cherished as his own. His quiet generosity touched countless lives, from his neighbors and friends who could always rely on his help to the family who felt his unwavering love.

Together with his wife, Sue, Brown’s philanthropic efforts have had a far-reaching impact on healing lives and strengthening communities. Their generosity has supported a wide range of organizations, including the YMCA, the Parks & Recreation Center in Greenville, and the Pediatric Ward at Baptist Health Deaconess. Their contributions also helped establish the Badgett Regional Center for Enhancement at Madisonville Community College. Other notable beneficiaries of their support include the Gatton Academy at Western Kentucky University, the University of Kentucky Women and Philanthropy, the Felix E. Martin, Jr. Foundation, the Hopkinsville Christian County Library, and Maryhurst in Louisville.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at First Christian Church of Hopkinsville, followed by the funeral service. Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Instead of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Salvation Army of Hopkinsville, the Boys & Girls Club of Hopkinsville, or Maryhurst of Louisville.
