A weekend altercation between neighbors led to the arrest of a Madisonville man on assault charges.

Madisonville Police said officers responded to a home on Hanson Street around 4:00 Sunday morning, where they found a man bleeding heavily from his nose. According to police, the injured man reported that his neighbor, 45-year-old Steven Matheny, had struck him in the face with a metal baton.

Police said Matheny claimed he saw the man on his property with a stick and that he threatened to kill his dog that was loose on the property. Matheny reportedly told officers that he got a baton from his vehicle and, while trying to block the man’s stick, struck him in the face. Witnesses told police they saw Matheny approach the man and throw the baton at his head, hitting him in the face.

Police said the man refused medical treatment at the scene.

Matheny was arrested on a charge of second-degree assault and booked into the Hopkins County Jail
