John Oakley/Hopkins County Jail mugshot
Three people were injured after a Mortons Gap man, who was arrested on DUI and other charges, crashed into multiple vehicles, including a police cruiser, in Madisonville Monday afternoon.
Madisonville Police reported shortly after 1:30 p.m., a patrolman was stopped in the median lane in front of Harris Funeral Home at 134 North Main Street, preparing to conduct a funeral escort, when he alerted Dispatch that he was involved in a collision involving multiple vehicles with possible injuries.
Police said multiple agencies responded to the scene to provide aid and conduct an investigation.
According to police, their investigation revealed that 21-year-old John Oakley was driving a pickup truck southbound on North Main Street when he collided with two utility poles on the west side of the road. Police said he then continued south, crossing the median into the northbound lane, where he struck the driver’s side of a Chevrolet Cavalier and the rear driver’s side of a marked police patrol car. Oakley reportedly proceeded south in the northbound lane, colliding with a Hyundai Elantra, causing it to spin and face south. Police reported his vehicle finally came to a stop after a head-on collision with another pickup truck in the northbound lane.
Police said both the driver and a passenger in the Chevrolet Cavalier were transported by ambulance to Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville for evaluation of possible injuries. Additionally, a passenger in the Hyundai was also taken to the hospital and lifeflighted for further evaluation and treatment.
Oakley was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of substances, aggravated circumstances, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle, volatile substance abuse, two counts of second-degree assault, three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, and five counts of first-degree criminal mischief. He was lodged in the Hopkins County Jail.
