MPD Chief Reports Crime Uptick, Gives Update on Police Academy

At the latest city council meeting, Madisonville Police Chief Steve Bryan reported a spike in sex-related crimes and gave an update on the city’s new police training academy.

In March, Chief Bryan said officers responded to more than 4,200 calls, made over 160 arrests, and worked over 60 accidents.

click to download audioHe noted that officers seized drugs with a total street value of $1,161 for the month, with methamphetamine being the most common drug confiscated.

Chief Bryan said there has been a significant increase in crimes.

click to download audioAt Mayor Kevin Cotton’s request, Chief Bryan shared an update on Madisonville’s new $50 million police training academy, which broke ground on Bean Cemetery Road on April 29th.

click to download audioChief Bryan stated that it was a “big catalyst” for getting that investment, because it allowed them to go ahead and start training recruits now while they build the facility.

click to download audioAt the April 29th groundbreaking, Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary Keith Jackson announced the new name for the campus: The Department of Criminal Justice Training West – Gaines Brown Campus, honoring former Secretary J. Michael Brown and Warren County Sheriff Jerry “Peanut” Gaines.

Secretary Jackson noted that Brown was the first Black Kentuckian to serve as Secretary of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, as well as holding positions as Deputy Attorney General and Secretary of the Executive Cabinet. He also mentioned that Gaines was Warren County’s longest-serving sheriff and a former National Sheriff of the Year.
