A group of local eighth graders is being recognized at the state level for a creative message on why showing up to class matters.

According to Hopkins County Schools, students from Browning Springs Middle School took home second place in the statewide “You Belong! Attendance Matters” video contest. The competition, a partnership between Kentucky STLP and the Kentucky Department of Education, tasked students with creating authentic messages about the importance of daily school attendance.

The award-winning team from Detra Eichhorn’s Library Media class worked with district leadership to research how missing just 10 percent of the school year can negatively impact a student’s academic progress and social relationships.

In a written statement, Director of Pupil Personnel Wendy Gamblin said the students handled every aspect of the project, from initial concept to filming and final editing. She added that they were honored to have District Superintendent Dr. Damon Fleming and Principal Michael Griffin join the students at the recent STLP competition to celebrate the achievement.

School officials indicate the video may be featured in future statewide attendance campaigns.

The student creators include Dominick Cherrie, Will Burden, Brantley Galvan, Ayden Miller, Jayden Manfredi, Tobias Kerby, Cylynn Price, Ashton Chi, and Xavier Brantley.
