A Nortonville man with active warrants was taken into custody after attempting to evade police in Madisonville early Friday morning.

Madisonville Police report that around 2:10 a.m., an officer saw 56-year-old Gregory Childress walking on West Noel Avenue near Browning Street and attempted to stop him. When approached, Childress reportedly turned away and began walking faster. Despite repeated commands to stop, police said Childress continued to ignore orders and tried to get away.

When police caught up with Childress, they said he resisted arrest and refused to cooperate, leading to a struggle in the middle of the road.

Police said Childress was eventually taken into custody and found with suspected marijuana and rolling papers inside a cigarette pack. Officers noted that he had bloodshot eyes, was sweating excessively, and had a strong odor of marijuana, indicating he was under the influence of a controlled substance.

Childress was booked into the Hopkins County Jail on charges of public intoxication, giving an officer false identifying information, third-degree fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
