Travelers in Kentucky may soon be packing their bags for bigger adventures, as the Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport takes an important step toward connecting the region with the world.
Officials at the Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport have announced that the Airport Board voted to recommend United Express service, operated by SkyWest Airlines, to the U.S. Department of Transportation for Essential Air Service flights.
If approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation, officials say United Express would operate 12 weekly round-trip flights using 50-seat regional jets with service to Chicago O’Hare and Washington Dulles.
Officials say travelers could see several benefits, including booking flights directly through the United Airlines website or app, earning United MileagePlus miles, and making easy connections across United’s global network. Passengers would also be able to enjoy one ticket for their entire journey and have their baggage automatically transferred to their final destination.
Under the federal Essential Air Service program, only one subsidized airline typically serves a community at any given time. If approved, United Express operated by SkyWest would replace Contour Airlines as the current service provider.
Pending approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation, officials indicate the new flights could begin as early as this summer.
