The Hopkins County Humane Society is moving ahead with plans for a new, state-of-the-art facility, estimated at $2.2 million, to replace its previous building that suffered significant damage in the April 2nd tornado.
Director Dustin Potenza says the Hopkins County Fiscal Court has agreed to deed the property of the old shelter on Laffoon Trail to the Hopkins County Humane Society.

click to download audioThe Hopkins County Fiscal Court has already approved $1 million for the shelter from the Kentucky Coal Severance Tax, and $200,000 remains from insurance on the old facility. This leaves around $1.2 million that the shelter hopes to raise through fundraising and donations.
As previously reported by WFMW’s News Edge, after the new animal shelter is finished, the Humane Society will maintain operations at the temporary facility on Dulin Street in Madisonville.
