A new opportunity is opening up for Kentucky’s coalfield communities, with millions in grant funding available to help turn local revitalization dreams into reality.

Governor Andy Beshear is encouraging communities in Kentucky’s eastern and western coalfield counties to apply for this year’s Abandoned Mine Lands Economic Revitalization grant program, which is expected to provide a total of $29.5 million in funding.

The grants are designed to support communities with a coal mining history in meeting their economic and community development goals. Grant applications will be accepted until 4 p.m. EDT on May 11, 2026.
