Great news for Henderson! Executive Director Abby Dixon of the Henderson Tourist Commission announced that Viking River Cruises will make Henderson a permanent stop, as the Viking Mississippi expands its itineraries to include the Ohio River starting in 2027. She says this change will bring hundreds of visitors to the riverfront and boost local tourism.
According to a release, Henderson’s connection with Viking began in 2024, when unexpected diversions brought the new Mississippi River cruise onto the Ohio River, allowing the community to welcome Viking passengers. Dixon says those early visits highlighted Henderson’s charm and hospitality, which helped secure its place as a regular stop on future cruise itineraries.
Dixon says cruise guests will enjoy a variety of shore excursions organized by the Henderson Tourist Commission, showcasing the area’s unique attractions. Options include time at Audubon State Park, the Porches & Petals Historic Home Tour, a bourbon and barbecue experience, insider access at Ellis Park, farm-to-table dining at Farmer & Frenchman Winery & Cafe, and tours of the historic Carnegie Library, among other experiences.
Each visit will kick off with a warm Kentucky welcome and lively bluegrass music from Kings Highway’s father-son duo, Mark and Zeb Hargis, as guests step ashore.
Dixon says the Viking Mississippi is scheduled to dock in Henderson on the following dates in 2027: June 12, June 18, Nov. 6, and Nov. 12.
In addition, she says that passengers stopping in Henderson on Friday, June 18, 2027, will get an extra treat as their visit coincides with the iconic W.C. Handy Blues & BBQ Festival, giving them a true taste of the city’s musical heritage.
In a written statement, Dixon says this is an incredible opportunity for Henderson to welcome visitors from all over and share the community’s story. She adds that becoming a permanent stop on a Viking itinerary reflects the strength of Hendereson’s partnerships and the memorable experiences their local businesses, attractions, and residents provide.
