State Representative Jim Gooch has been appointed Treasurer of the Executive Committee of the Southern States Energy Board, an interstate organization dedicated to fostering collaboration and innovation in energy and environmental policies, programs, and technologies throughout the South. Gooch also serves as chair of the Kentucky House Committee on Natural Resources and Energy, and represents the 12th District, which includes the counties of Crittenden, McLean, Union, and Webster.

In a written statement, Gooch said, “We are truly at a crossroads with energy in America today, and the Southern States Energy Board plays a major role in determining our future.” He added that this appointment is both an honor and a responsibility that he will continue to approach with great care and commitment. He said, “Serving in a leadership role on the board allows Kentucky to have a strong voice in shaping regional energy policy and ensuring our priorities are represented at the table.”

Gooch was first appointed to the Southern States Energy Board as an alternate member in 2013 under Governor Andy Beshear. He was later appointed as the House representative in 2017 and reappointed to the role by Governor Matt Bevin in 2019.

Gooch is widely known at both the state and national level as a vocal supporter of Kentucky’s coal industry and a leader in advancing broad energy initiatives.

Gooch noted that Kentucky coal was central to the state’s economic growth and industrial prosperity in the 20th century and said they plan to honor that legacy by keeping Kentucky at the forefront of energy production, with coal continuing to provide reliable, affordable power.

The Southern States Energy Board promotes clean energy solutions, supports innovation, and unites government and industry leaders to advance strong energy policies that boost the South’s economy. Its members include governors, legislators from sixteen southern states, two U.S. territories, and a presidential appointee.

Speaker David Osborne said he is pleased with Chairman Gooch’s new leadership role on the Southern States Energy Board and values his commitment to representing Kentucky’s interests. Osborne added that collaborating with other southern states will help promote innovation and find balanced, practical energy solutions.
