AAA projects that 122.4 million Americans will journey at least 50 miles from home during the 13-day year-end holiday period from December 20th through January 1st. This is a new travel record and represents a 2.2% jump from last year.

According to AAA officials, nearly 90% will be hitting the roads as gas prices dip below $3.00 a gallon. Air travel and alternative transportation methods, such as buses, trains, and cruises, are also on the rise.

In the East South Central Region, which includes Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi, 6.8 million people are expected to travel. This is up 1% from last year.

AAA urges all drivers to practice safe driving, especially since December marks National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. AAA and Mothers Against Drunk Driving remind travelers to plan safe rides home during what is often a dangerous time on the roads.
