Madisonville Police have released details about an incident that led to the closure of Interstate 69 southbound on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say that around 2:00 p.m., they received a report of a red Chevrolet pickup truck driving recklessly along the southbound interstate. When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, they say the driver didn’t stop, but eventually pulled onto the shoulder after passing exit 114.

After the vehicle came to a stop, police reported hearing a gunshot. The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky State Police arrived on the scene to assist and shut down both southbound and northbound traffic as a safety precaution.

According to Madisonville Police, a drone was used to monitor the driver inside the vehicle and determine if the scene was safe.  Police say they found the driver had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police told WFIE 14 News that no shots were fired at law enforcement, and no officers were injured during the incident.

The name of the driver has not been released, and the investigation is ongoing.
