Ryan Hopkins/Hopkins County Jail mugshot
A call about abandoned property led to the arrest of a Madisonville man after police discovered a concealed handgun at a residence this week.
Madisonville Police said they responded to the call on Tuesday, October 25, at 338 South Kentucky Avenue, where officers found a handgun wrapped in a plastic bag and a towel hidden beneath a water hose reel.
According to police, the next-door resident, 38-year-old Ryan Hopkins, said that he discovered a loaded handgun in his yard, removed the magazine, and, feeling nervous about notifying authorities, decided to hide the firearm under his neighbor’s hose reel.
Authorities reported that after obtaining a search warrant for Hopkins’ home, officers located a lock box next to the living room couch containing ammunition identical to what was found in the handgun’s magazine.
Hopkins was taken into custody and charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. He was booked into the Hopkins County Jail.
