Kentucky has secured $17.8 million in previously pledged federal funds to help build electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the state, enabling longer-distance EV travel for residents and visitors.
The approval of Kentucky’s EV Infrastructure Deployment Plan (EVIDP) brings the state’s total allocation through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program to nearly $55 million.
With the new funding in place, Kentucky is set to expand to Phases 2 and 3 of its EV plan, extending charging infrastructure along priority corridors, in communities, and at destination sites. The plan was developed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in cooperation with the Energy & Environment Cabinet and the Federal Highway Administration.
To date, 46 fast-charging sites have been awarded across Kentucky, with five already open and three more under construction. The stations currently operational are in Berea, Grayson, Hazard, Richmond, and Sparta. All 46 awarded sites are expected to be operational by 2026. These projects represent a $31.6 million investment in NEVI formula funds.
The open sites in Grayson and Sparta are located at Love’s Travel Stops—Grayson just off I-64 (Exit 172) and Sparta just off I-71 (Exit 55). Each site has two units capable of charging four vehicles at 160 kW each.
Developers selected must fund at least 20% of construction and operational costs and maintain and operate each station for at least five years. Kentucky, for its part, does not own or operate the stations.
