The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced that plans have now been finalized for a contractor to begin a maintenance project on the Southbound U..S. 41 Bridge in Henderson.

The work is slated to begin Tuesday, September 9, and continue through October 18.

According to state transportation officials, crews plan to be on the bridge daily from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., during which time the southbound bridge will be restricted to one lane. They say there is no plan to alter traffic on the northbound bridge at this time.

During the 40-day work schedule, engineers will be monitoring daily traffic flows and will have some flexibility to adjust the daily lane closure times if it becomes necessary.

State transportation officials note this project consists primarily of repairs to issues found during a specialized T-1 steel inspection conducted in late 2024. T-1 steel, a strong and weldable material once commonly used in bridge construction during the 1950s and 1960s, is now outdated. After a weld fracture was found in a T-1 steel bridge in 2021, federal officials required states to inspect and test similar bridges for safety.

State transportation officials say the southbound bridge, built in 1965 with T-1 steel, was found to have issues during an inspection and now requires repairs. They note the northbound bridge, built in 1932, was not constructed with T-1 steel.

Officials also said they are aware of a discrepancy on the message boards placed near the Twin Bridges in Henderson on Wednesday, August 27. They said the board was activated before programming was complete and incorrectly listed the construction start date as September 15. Originally the project was slated to begin September 8, but was delayed one day to September 9.
