Nearly six months after work began on about a 4-mile stretch of Interstate 69 in Madisonville, state transportation officials say crews are set to launch the final phase of the project this weekend, with new asphalt scheduled to be laid along the entire section.

This phase of work is scheduled to take place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced that starting Sunday afternoon, the southbound fast lane on I-69—from the Fowler Road overpass to the front of the mall—will close at about 4 p.m. for roadway milling. After work on the southbound fast lane is complete, crews will proceed to the northbound fast lane, then the southbound slow lane, and finally the northbound slow lane. Crews expect to complete the new asphalt base by Tuesday, July 29, with exit and on-ramp closures taking place as necessary while the slow lanes are being worked on.

When the base layer is finished, officials said paving will begin in the same order: starting with the southbound fast lane, then the northbound fast lane, followed by the southbound slow lane, and finally the northbound slow lane.

Beginning Sunday and continuing until paving wraps up in August, officials said some lane restrictions within the project area will be lifted each morning. Lane closures in both directions on I-69 between the mall area and Island Ford Road will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, they said closures from Island Ford Road to the Fowler Road overpass will remain in effect until all work is finished.
