The Hopkins County Health Department has reported an outbreak of Giardia in Hopkins County.
Local health officials explain that Giardia is a parasite ingested through the mouth and passes through the intestinal tract, leading to diarrhea. They say it can be found in water sources such as lakes, pools, or streams, and can also spread when unwashed hands touch food or surfaces after using the bathroom.
The outbreak is currently being monitored by epidemiology nurses from the Hopkins County Health Department, as well as by state epidemiologists and the state epidemiology department. Health officials say they are investigating the cases to find any common factors. At this time, they have not identified a definitive source. If a source is determined, the local health department will inform the public.
Officials with the Hopkins County Health Department reported Monday that there have been 23 cases of Giardia in the past month in the county. They note that this number is unusual for Hopkins County, and an investigation is ongoing.
