Murray State University has been selected to host the Governor’s Scholars Program (GSP) during the summers of 2026, 2027 and 2028, continuing a long-standing partnership with one of Kentucky’s most prestigious educational initiatives.
The program, which began in 1983, is a summer residential experience for Kentucky’s top high school students heading into their senior year. Focused on academic and personal growth, GSP combines a liberal arts curriculum with leadership development, community engagement, and residential life. Participation is highly competitive, and selected students attend at no cost.
Murray State is currently hosting 347 students from 117 Kentucky counties for the 2025 session, which runs from June 22 through July 26. Over the next three years, the university expects to welcome around 350 scholars each summer.
The program’s curriculum is divided into three areas: Focus Area courses for in depth study, General Studies classes that encourage inquiry and leadership, and Seminar sessions that address personal development topics such as career planning and interpersonal skills.
Along with classroom learning, GSP includes guest speakers, performers, field trips, and special events, creating a well-rounded and enriching educational atmosphere.
Murray State first hosted GSP in the 1980s. Dr. Melony Shemberger, professor of Journalism and Mass Communications, is leading the 2025 campus session as director.
Three additional faculty members—Dr. Tana Field-Bartholomew, Dr. Iin Handayani, and Dr. Bella Ezuma—are also serving as instructors this summer.
