Hopkins County Schools announced Friday that Derek Stone has been selected to serve as the district’s Director of Transportation.
District officials noted that, with 19 years in education—including six in administrative leadership as both assistant principal and principal—Stone brings extensive experience to his new role.
In a written statement, Stone expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve Hopkins County in this new role and said he looks forward to working with staff to ensure transportation is safe, efficient, and enjoyable for everyone.
District Communications and Community Engagement Specialist Lori Harrison shared that Stone has held roles as principal and assistant principal at Webster County Middle School, spent the past year teaching fourth grade at Grapevine Elementary in Hopkins County, and has also taught at West Hopkins School and Jesse Stuart Elementary School.
Stone earned an Education Specialist degree in School Leadership, a Master of Arts in School Administration, and a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, all from Murray State University.
According to Harrison, Stone is part of the Hopkins County Schools’ 2024–2025 Rising Leaders cohort and also serves as the powerlifting coach at Hopkins County Central High School.
Incoming Superintendent Dr. Damon Fleming says Stone’s experience in managing daily school operations, coordinating staff, and upholding high standards of service will serve him well as Director of Transportation. Fleming added that Stone will oversee all aspects of student transportation across the district, focusing on providing safe, efficient, and reliable service while supporting the transportation team.
Dr. Fleming encouraged the community to join him in welcoming Stone to this important role and to offer their full support as he begins his work.
