Walgreens and Greater Than HIV, a public information campaign from KFF, are teaming up with health departments and community groups to offer free rapid HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis C testing at more than 575 Walgreens locations nationwide on Friday, June 27 for National HIV Testing Day.
This year marks a record level of participation, with over 415 local testing partners involved across nearly every state, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Since 2011, the initiative has provided more than 93,000 free HIV/STD tests through the in-store program.
Testing will take place in private areas or mobile units at participating stores and will be conducted by trained counselors. Results will be available in 20 minutes or less, and information about new prevention options like PrEP and doxy PEP, as well as the latest in treatment, will also be provided.
This year’s expanded testing offerings come in response to persistently high STD rates, including rising cases of congenital syphilis.
More than 22,000 test kits have been donated by manufacturers such as OraSure, Diagnostics Direct, and bioLytical Laboratories. No appointment is required for testing.
National organizations including ASTHO, NACCHO, NASTAD, NCSD, and the Big Cities Health Coalition are also supporting outreach. Meanwhile, Mesmerize, a national advertising network, is promoting the campaign on 1,200 clinic screens throughout June.
