New Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance measures are now in effect in Henderson, Union, and Webster counties after a CWD-positive deer was found just across the Ohio River in Posey County, Indiana.

The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission has added these counties to the state’s CWD Surveillance Zone, which already includes 11 western Kentucky counties. The goal is to help monitor and limit the disease’s spread among deer.

Key Measures Now in Effect:

Mandatory Testing: Deer harvested in Henderson, Union, or Webster counties during the first three days of modern gun season (Nov. 8–10, 2025) must be tested at a check station or drop-off site.

Carcass Restrictions: Whole carcasses or high-risk deer parts may not leave the zone. Hunters may transport deboned meat, clean skulls, hides, antlers, and taxidermy mounts.

Rehabilitation Ban: Deer rehab is prohibited in these counties.

Baiting Rules Adjusted: Baiting is now allowed in all CWD Surveillance Zone counties but not through contact feeders. Baiting is still banned on Wildlife Management Areas and from March 1–July 31 statewide.

New Antlerless Season: A two-day antlerless-only gun season is scheduled for Sept. 27–28, 2025. Antlered bucks may not be taken during this special hunt. Harvested deer heads must be submitted for CWD testing.

CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer and elk. It is not known to infect humans, but the CDC advises against eating meat from infected animals.

Since 2002, Kentucky has tested over 60,000 deer and elk for CWD. Free testing is available throughout hunting season. Learn more at fw.ky.gov/cwd or call 800-858-1549.
