More than 260 children cast lines—many for the first time—during the Third Annual Take Kids Fishing Day on Saturday, May 31, at Lochmary Lake in Earlington.
The community event, hosted by the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA), IUE-CWA Local 83701, the Hopkins County Sportsmen and Sportswomen Club, and the City of Earlington, drew a total crowd of 377 people.
Event volunteer leader Loman Scarbrough, a member of IUE-CWA Local 83701, noted this year’s record-setting participation and said plans are already in motion to make next year’s event even bigger, with hopes of surpassing 500 attendees.
Union volunteers played a key role, handling everything from preparing fishing rods to grilling hot dogs and hamburgers for attendees.
The event also received a boost from out-of-state supporters. Members of several Kansas IUE-CWA locals—passing through the region on their way to a national union event—pitched in to help. Some assisted with fishing gear while others manned the grills, highlighting how union solidarity can stretch far beyond local communities.
Scarbrough emphasized the event’s open-door spirit and community focus, noting that no one left hungry and that many attendees stopped by just to support the effort and enjoy the fellowship.
All equipment and food were provided at no cost, making the event accessible for families. For many kids, it marked their first time fishing—a milestone made possible through the efforts of dozens of volunteers.
Union Sportsmen’s Alliance Conservation Coordinator Maggie Sager said the event’s impact extends beyond a single day. She emphasized that Take Kids Fishing Day helps pass down outdoor traditions, strengthens bonds between families and communities, and creates lasting memories.
With momentum growing, organizers say they are already preparing for next year’s event, aiming to continue the tradition and expand its reach.
