The Madisonville Fire Department battled two separate structure fires over the weekend.

According to a report, firefighters responded to a house fire at 1015 Grapevine Road shortly after 8:30 Saturday night and upon arrival found flames visible from the entrance door on the side of the home. Fire officials said the homeowner stated that groceries were left on the stovetop and that a dog must have hit one of the knobs and turned on a burner.

Firefighters attacked the fire from the exterior and interior of the home which had reportedly spread from the kitchen into the living room.

During a primary search of the home, officials said a dog was found in the bedroom and appeared to be alive and well. They said Medical Center Ambulance Service was requested at the scene to check the homeowner who inhaled smoke.

After Madisonville Electric Department removed the electric meter from the structure, parts of the ceiling were pulled to check for fire in the attic but none was found. Firefighters then used fans to clear the home of smoke and checked for any hot spots before clearing the scene.

Fire officials said the home suffered significant damage to its interior.

The second house fire occurred at 644 South Madison Street around 9:30 Sunday night. Upon arrival, Madisonville firefighters reportedly found smoke coming from the eaves of the home and front of the structure. Officials said firefighters were informed by Madisonville Police that the house was vacant and no one was inside.

Upon entering the home, officials said firefighters were met with heavy smoke and quickly put out a fire found inside a furnace grate in the floor that was running up an interior door frame.

After a primary search of the home and checking for fire in the attic, firefighters ventilated the home to remove the smoke and deemed the scene safe. Officials said the structure was cordoned off with fire line tape, and all fire units cleared the scene.

Fire officials said the home on South Madison Street suffered moderate fire damage.
